Corner of Walnut & Broadway Streets
The Hudson Baptist Church was organized May 28, 1856. Meetings started in Hudson’s first schoolhouse. In 1858, Deacon J.H. Cox donated a site at the corner of Walnut and Broadway Streets for a church to be built. The dedication of the new structure occurred in August 1860.
Reverend Fred M. Smith was pastor when the church was remodeled with the addition of a parlor and two dressing rooms. A baptistery was built in 1875, and new pews, chairs and pulpit were added. Stained-glass windows replaced the old windows, the vestibule was enlarged, and a large chandelier with twelve lamps was hung in the center of the church. A full basement was added in 1908 at a cost of $73.97. A furnace was also installed.
In 1884, a parsonage was constructed just west of the church at a cost of $1,269. The house still stands on the N.E. corner of McLean and Walnut Streets.
